Trivia

  • The Southern League Cup was a regional Scottish football competition held during the Second World War, due to the suspension of national competitions. Held between 1940 and 1946, the competition involved all teams from the Southern League and was played as four groups of four with the group winners forming the semi-finals. In the final season, due to additional teams, the competition doubled in size with quarter-finals for the eight group winners.
  • Friday April 25 – Willie Maley’s 73rd birthday. Constant stream of visitors to the Bank Restaurant to congratulate him.
  • We wonder if that excluded many old Celtic management and board staff after the fallout as I believe he was avoiding Celtic after the financial payoff issue… Sad way to end it but at least he returned to Celtic in due time…  We doubt it. He never went back to Celtic Park until about 1953, but he was frequently seen at Cathkin and even Ibrox where they enjoyed his fulminations against the Celtic Directors!
  • Celtic Reserves 5 Motherwell Reserves 0 in 2nd XI Cup, but Lynch, Murphy, Crum, Divers allowed to play. Why?

Review

Very disappointing performance with Divers missing an open goal at a time when it would have made a difference. The Sunday Post says that Celtic fans must have felt like singing “Oh, Johnny, Oh!” instead of “Erin’s Green Valleys” as they made their doleful procession up Leith Walk.
