Trivia
- On the 14th October Middlesbrough turned down Celtic’s final offer of two players plus an unspecified sum of money for Wilf Mannion. This ‘battle fund’ to bring in a tried and tested goal scorer was rumoured to be as much as £30,000. Celtic then turned to Leslie Johnston who they acquired from Clyde for £12,000.
- This turned out to be the biggest attendance at a football match in Britain this season.
- This was the last of the League Cup group games and left Celtic in third position – again not qualifying for the quarter finals – behind Hibernian and Rangers, with Clyde, despite a tremendous 6-3 win against Celtic at Parkhead trailing in fourth spot. Rangers qualified for the quarter finals.
- On 10th October Celtic signed Alex Rollo from Ashfield Juniors.
Review
Rangers opening goal on 49 minutes was extremely fortuitous. Williamson’s back was to the Celtic goal when 20 yards out he lunged in to block Boden’s clearance and fortunately, the ball struck his foot and rose in the air to sail over Willie Miller’s head and into the goal. Celtic’s goal 4 minutes after half timewas the cause of much complaint from Rangers – how could the referee give a penalty against Rangers at Ibrox? – as Rangers appealed to the referee that Woodburn’s tackle on Gallacher had been fair. McPhail scored from the spot. Celtic questioned the validity of Waddell’s goal 18 minutes from the end but his anticipation of Thornton’s pass had been timed to perfection and he had beaten the offside fairly.
