- For the third season in succession Celtic were drawn in a group with Rangers.
- This was the debut game for both the young Bobby Colins and for Mike Haughney. Bobby Collins had been signed in August 1948 and had played the whole of the previous season in the Reserves. Mike Haughney too had been beavering away in the Reserves since his signing from Newtongrange Star in January 1949. Both made impressive debuts with Haughney getting the late winner.
Review
Commonly known as ‘the McAuley game’, this was the game where Pat twisted and turned and sold more dummies that he drove his opposite number Findlay to distraction. With Tully and Haughney they delighted the crowd with their triangular pass and move game and it looked as though Celtic had found the edge – perhaps the tricks and training that Jimmy Hogan brought were impacting. Bobby Collins was played on the right wing and Mike Haughney over on the left. By all accounts this appears to have been an excellent game for Celtic. When Rangers equalised on 65 minutes, Haughney was moved inside from the left wing and duly was in the right place to score the winner.
