Trivia
- Hibernian had set the pace in the group with two excellent wins against St Mirren and Partick Thistle. A win here against Celtic, as they were expected to come away with and they were all but through to the quarter finals. For Celtic it was a case of 'must win'.
- Out went Jock Weir, John McDonald and Bertie Peacock and in came Millsopp, Fernie at inside right, McPhail returned to centre forward and the versatile Mike Haughney went to outside left. The defense stayed as it was.
- Jimmy Walsh was holding out for a better contract and considering what he had been offered. This was why he had so far failed to play for Celtic. He duly resigned a contract on the 21st August.
Review
Given the necessity of a win here Celtic resorted to tactics more commonly seen against them playing on the break and as a 'robust' side whilst Hibernian were allowed to do all the fancy dan stuff. The game produced quite a stir firstly with the surprise at the Celtic line-up and during the game, the 'robustness' of the Celtic approach. The Rangers-loving correspondent for the Evening Times, Alan Breck, made a strong point against Celtic in his column the next day and the match report below you can feel the depth of his resentment at the way in which Celtic went all ouit to stop Hibernian.
