Trivia

  • A debut game for Frank Meechan signed in the summer from Petershill. With Stein out injured, Boden moved to centre half with Meechan coming in at right back; Jackie Millsopp came in on the right wing with Jimmy Walsh as centre forward.
  • Going into the last game of the group section Celtic held a two point advantage over Hibernian, but Hibernian with a superior goal advantage needed the win to tie on points and go through on a far better goal average. A draw on the other hand would favour Celtic.

Review

The loss of Stein who had been a rock at the centre of defense so far through the League Cup proved a real hindrance.
Hibs started well but Celtic also defended well with the positional sense and composure of Evans and Boden evident. Hibs made most of the attacking but it was from a breakaway following a Celtic attack that they got their first goal with Turnbull firing home. Their second came from a corner and at half time it stood at 2-0 to Hibs.
The second half saw Hibs start like a train anxious tio finish it as a contest. Tully finally got going and went on some mazy runs. Buchanan was booked for a trip on Walsh and following this Peacock was booked for dissent. With 75 minutes gone the referee picked up a bottle thrown onto the pitch and the police went into the terraces to do what the police did best then.
With the exception of Tully the Celtic attack never really got started. In defense Evans, Boden and Baillie showd their class all game.
