Trivia

  • On the 17th September Jackie Millsopp died in the Royal Infirmary from a burst appendix. He was 21. He had been taken ill after training on the 9th September and operated on. Complications set in and he died on the 17th. Jackie was buried in Cambuslang on the morning of the game. Both teams wore black arm bands, the flags all flew at half mast and there was a minute's silence before kick off.
  • This was an all ticket game and the first Celtic game where the new entrance prices were in force. Ground ticket prices were raised to 2/- from 1s 6d and the stand price rose to 7s 6d from 5s. The price rise was throughout the game north and south of the border and instigated by the government.

  • The game took place during the disgraceful questioning of Celtic flying the "Eire" flag (see Glasgow Herald report below)

Review

A cunning plan along the lines of necessity being the mother of invention saw two defenders playing as attackers for Celtic. Celtic deserved their victory and scored a great goal in doing so. On 4 minutes Fallon fell over the ball some 30 yards from the Rangers goal. Jimmy Walsh's speed enabled him to get to the ball before McColl and he beat Woodburn with some deft footwork before firing an accurate and powerful shot past Niven. It was a goal all the way.
