Trivia

  • The tinkering continued; Fallon was out as he was about to play for Eire in Dublin against France. This allowed Meechan back into the left back slot; John McPhail returned as centre forward. In form Alex Stott returned for Partick Thistle (he was on the transfer list despite having 16 goals to his name).

Review

The recent games between Thistle and Celtic had all been crackers. Though Celtic were the form team, the Jags had an upper hand in the recent meetings. Still, the form said that Celtic should win it.

In the opening 10 minutes Celtic settled down and attacked Thistle and could have had a goal rom a Thistle mistake in the first minute. Following the opening 10 Thistle found their feet and a period of end-to-end football followed with Celtic having good attempts from Evans and Walsh and strong defending from Meechan keeping it goal-less.Stott opened the scoring volleying an Evans clearance straight back past Hunter. A pattern developed of strong Celtic pressure and poor shooting followed by Thistle counter-attacks and at half time Thistle were 1-0 up.
Thistle took the initiative after the break with Stott leading from the front. On 57 minutes he got his second when Sharp beat two defenders to send a cross over which Stott headed home. When Howitt headed home a third Celtic were shaken but continued to attack. The Jags defense held out till the end to leave Celtic well beaten in an excellent game.
