Trivia

  • Bonnar was back between the sticks, with Hunter rested; McPhail was moved to centre forward again and Stein moved to left half with McIlroy coming in as centre half; McGrory was dropped and Collins was injured.
  • Several teams decided not to run a second string or reserve team in the following season; these were to this date Morton, St Johnstone, Arbroath and Dundee Utd. All of these were in Division B and given the SFA's decision to go to four leagues in Scotland it looked as though there might be some kind of mismatch in outlook between the clubs below top league level and the governing body.
  • Celtic signed Eric Smith an inside forward from Benburb
  • Second and last game for John Duffy

Review

Another loss and dropped places – down to 8th in the League.
Honours were even for the opening quarter of an hour. Then Flavell had a good shot saved by Bonnar. This was a precursor for the move on 18 minutes when Billy Steel beat Evans and Haughney and crossed from the left. Bonnar failed to cut out the cross and Henderson passed back to Flavell to drive home. They went further ahead just before the half hour mark when Henderson and Flavell combined and the centre forward laid the ball to Toner who side-footed into the net with Bonnar beaten. Just before the whistle Dundee got a third from a long range Henderson shot. Celtic's reply had been a Fernie shot which was saved.
In the second half Jock Stein went back to centre half with McPhail at left half and McIlroy up front. This proved to be somewhat better and McIlroy was close with a header from a Tully cross. Henderson got a fourth goal for Dundee just before the final whistle.
A poor game for Celtic all round with a poorly set out Celtic team.
