Trivia
- The team selection looked like random madness and clutching at straws but the places were up for grabs with a misfiring forward line and a defense that had shipped 5 goals against Aberdeen; . Jock Stein was out and in his place came the 6ft 2" McIlroy with McPhail moved from left half to centre forward to replace the Mochan, who was dropped; a re-signed and fit Joe Baillie came back as left half; Jimmy Walsh also came back in.
Review
The first half saw Celtic dominant without fully testing the Airdrie keeper. Walsh scored a first goal when he crossed to McMillan and then took the return to fire home the first goal. McPhail's goal came from a move between Collins and Walsh and Walsh crossing in and the Airdrie goalkeeper failing to hold the ball allowing McPhail in.
