Trivia

  • This game took place two days after the Scottish Cup Final where Celtic secured the Double. The team had no doubt been busy and ‘carousing’. The trophy itself had gone on display at Celtic Park on the Sunday and was shown to the crowd at this game on the Monday evening. This was more than the crowd at Hampden had been allowed where, having accepted the trophy and held it aloft to the fans, the team had not been allowed to circuit the park to show it off but had been ushered back to the dressing room by the SFA officials. This had been agreed before the Cup Final.
  • Vince Ryan came in for his debut for this time; Jock Stein was rested and McIlroy came in; Willie Fernie was also rested with Bobby Collins getting a run out.
  • Last match for Jim McIlroy.
  • Following this game work began on the roofing of the West End of Celtic Park with the plan being to have 50% of the standing area covered with a roof and the eventual aim was to have the whole of the terracing covered – a task that would take several years.

Fine Display by Goalkeeper –
Haughney Scores.
Glasgow Herald, 27th April, 1954.

Celtic began well at Parkhead last night but after a few minutes it was clear that they had come up against a goalkeeper in top form in Houston and despite breaching the Hamilton defences he was going to take some beating. His best save was his diverting for a corner kick a Mochan free kick of great power.

After defying the Celtic attack for nine minutes he was beaten by a raging Haughney shot which flew off his hands and into the roof of the net. Thereafter Hamilton came more in to the game but they lacked a marksman. McIlroy all but put through his own goal, his pass back beating Bonnar but Ryan managed to get back in time to head over.

Bonnar was very safe in the Celtic goal and Ryan was the better full back. Haughney outshone Peacock at wing half. McIlroy and Collins also played well. Houston, Scott, Stirling and Martin all defended well for Hamilton. Walker and Brown struck an intelligent partnership in the second half, but received little encouragement from their forward colleagues.
