Trivia
- A benefit game played for the Petershill side to inaugurate the new 9000 covered enclosure they had built at their ground. Celtic had a good association with the Petershill club and this was not the first Friendly played at their ground by the two sides. When Petershill Park was opened in 1935 the two Glasgow sides had made the opposition in the inaugural game.
- The game was a non-ticket affair though 4000 tickets were sold before the game.
- Celtic played a team largely made up of the reserves and young players with John Jack, Alec Boden and Jimmy Walsh only having seen first team action. Fletcher and Mulvey would not make first team debuts.
There are no team lists but the Evening Times printed a photocall of the two teams on 28th August and the teams below are made up from that and a preview of the game, in which the Rangers selection is not mentioned. Though Eamon McMahon was quoted in goal for Celtic in the preview it looks like Andrew Bell was between the sticks on the night.
Review
A Friendly but a game that was interesting without ever reaching ‘classic’ status. Rangers delayed naming their team as they were to play Stirling Albion when the preview article came out and there is some uncertainty on the actual teams that played.
This was a match played to open the new covered enclosure at Petershill Park in Springburn. Both teams fielded largely second-string players as the season was already underway. This is possibly the first photo of Peter Goldie as a Celtic player and he turned out on the right wing.
