Trivia

  • A debut for the young Irish third choice keeper Eamon McMahon. Eamon was preferred to Andrew Bell and got his start when Bonnar wrenched his arm in training during the previous week.
  • Also a debut for John Eric Smith. Eric Smith had been used as a utility player and stepped in for Willie Fernie who was on international duty for Scotland playing against Wales in a 1-0 win in Cardiff.
  • Following the win over Aberdeen the previous week Celtic sat at the top of the league after five games. They were expected to win this game and establish a breathing gapo at the top of the table. However this draw and Aberdeen winning emphatically against St Mirren saw Celtic drop back behind Aberdeen but with the same number of points.

Review

Celtic attacked from the off with Tully, Higgins, Walsh and Smith all involved without scoring. Henderson in the Queens goal was playing well and made big and important saves for the Dumfries side and but for him they ould have been down by five goals at half time. As it was Celtic went in a goal behind when Black fired in a low shot and though McMahon got his hand to it , the spin took it over the line (see below). Celtic came out for the second half all fired up. Mochan and Walsh again switched places. Mochan was through on an empty goal but Binning got back to make the saving tackle. Both Walsh and Mochan hit the bar. Higgins scored right at the death from a Walsh cross.

"I advanced from goal as Black shot from the edge of the penalty box. I had the ball covered low down to my right. As I dived I got both hands to it but to my horror the ball squirmed from my grasp and wriggled over the line. I can still recall the banner headline in one of the Glasgow papers reading 'Oh Eamon!'. As a young player I was devastated!"
