Review
The expectations of a thrilling game failed to be realised in this fixture. A bumpy pitch led to poor ball control and miskicks, mis-directed passes and missed opportunities. It took 25 minutes to produce a save of note at either end, when Brown was called on to make a double save from Tully. Later in the half Brown saved a Walsh shot but generally the first half was tedious. At half time the match was goalless.
The second half produced a little more vigour from the players without really seeing any improvement in the game. Fernie and Tully did their utmost to spur on the Celtic attack which in the end was more persistent than Kilmarnock's. Stein, after a shaky start was dominant in midfield for Celtic and Kilmarnock could not find a way past the centre half. Flavell having little luck against him went out to the left wing. Mackay headed the ball past his goalkeeper on 52 minutes from a Haughney free kick which was headed into the area by Peacock but Killie quickly pulled a goal back when Mackay centred and Murray juggled the ball before firing home. Tully scored the winning goal twenty minutes from the end.
