Trivia

  • Fernie was fit again and came back in for Alec Boden. For Thistle new boy Frank Donlevy started at left back. The ground was hard and slippery underfoot with most of the players losing their footing regularly. Tully even left the field at one point to change into rubber soled and studded footwear at the side of the track.
  • An interesting weekend of games which had potential bearing on the championship. Hearts played Aberdeen and won 2-0 which with the number of games Hearts had in hand brought them into the reckoning. Rangers also beat Clyde 1-0 but St Mirren faded out losing 2-1 to Stirling Albion.

Review

Described as a deplorable display from the Celtic forwards. Lots of effort and enthusiasm but no methodical appraoch and no example of them working as a unit despite the presence of Tully to orchestrate moves. Partick's defenders had an arduous task but one which they were capable of fulfilling given the individualist nature of the attack they faced and they could hold their own in the physical contest too. Collins looked the brightest of the bunch but he even fell foul of the general demise in the shooting department. Tully did not look fit enough to lead the line. Fernie resorted to his old ways and was less successful a dribbler than ever and Walsh appeared to hold no love for playing at outside right. Fallon was not a centre forward – great heart but little aptitude. The defense however had an easier task to contain Thistle so this game was built around the two defenses. Celtic were almost caught out in the last minutes whenStein took a shot that was headed goalwards in the face and from a free kick Smith hit a post. Fortunately no one was following up. Celtic's best shot came from Meechan the full back.
