Trivia

  • With Collins and Stein fit again the half back line returned to the usual tried and trusted line up; Bobby Collins came back in at outside right with Jimmy Walsh dropping out.
  • Prior to the game Celtic trained down at Seamill on the coast. Fernie was still out.
  • This was the game that had been postponed from back in january due to snow. As the game started the punters in the stand were all surprised to see the full Clyde team arrive and seat themselves to watch the match, a nice preview to their Cup Final against Celtic. The game was played in brillaint sunshine. In a generous sporting gesture as the teams made their entrance the loudspeaker asked all spectators to show their appreciation for the League Champions – and 40,000 people did just that magnificently.
  • In the week before the game Celtic provisionally signed right half Duncan MacKay from Maryhill Harp.
  • Jock Weir's case finally came up before the Gasgow Sheriff Court. He was fined £25 for resetting 7000 cigarettes, 144 boxes of magic (gross!!) and 100 books of matches. The offence took place in a pub in Blackfriars where Weir was the chargehand.

Review

Aberdeen as champios were somewhat disappointing, particularly in attack. McPhail and Tully both played well, the latter in particular. McPhail used all his craft in his new slimmed down 13 stone frame and his goal in the 60th minute came when Tully beat Paterson and having dribbled in along the byeline he passed in to Mochan whose shot was saved and McPhail pounced on the rebound like a shot. McPhail had earlier scored the first when he charged the goalkeeper and the ball over the line when Tully hoisted a high ball into the goalmouth from the touchline. Martin protested all the way to the centre circle and for his pains was on the end of the barracking crowd for the rest of the game. Earlier McPhail had been refused a penalty when he was chopped down in the area. Stein was in masterful mood and controlled Buckley well. Collins went to inside right in the second half.
