Trivia

  • Bertie Peacock was absent playing for a Great Britain XI v Continental XI at Windsor Park, Belfast on this day. Great Britain lost 1-4. In his place John McPhail played at left half, a position which he had played before and which suited his style and neat passing ability.
  • The team looked very familiar to the team that had finished the previous season with only the McPhail – Peacock switch.
  • When the draw for the League Cup and the fixtures had been announced Celtic had been due to open the campaign against Rangers at home on this day. At the request of the Chief Constable of Glasgow this was changed. The reason? On the same day there was a demonstartion / convocation of the Orange Lodge in Helenvale Park. The congruence of a Celtic – Rangers game and an orange Lodge 'festival' was considered far too risky by the police, given the history of mayhem in the early 50's at these games.
  • Bobby Collins started writing a weekly column in the Evening Times Pink One every Saturday. In his first column he discussed training routines.

Review

Mochan scored in 30 seconds direct from a free kick from 25 yards after Smith was penalised for handling a pass from Fernie to Walsh. Fernie and Walsh troubled the Queens defense and the Celtic defense looked as though it was carrying on where it had left off the previous season and keeping it tight with Bonnar in good form as the last resort. In 16 minutes Patterson equalised for Queens with a pass into the net. Walsh put Celtic ahead with a trap and shot from a Tully header.
Celtic started the second half sharply and were soon further ahead directly from kick off with the move ending with Bobby Collins firing home. A fourth goal soon arrived from Fernie. The pressure was all on the Queen of the South goal in the second half but two minutes from time Patterson pulled another goal back for the Dumfries side.
