Review
Celtic began well and the Tully – Collins right wing appeared to have the beating of Little, with Rae and Young frequently having to cover for him as first Tully, then Collins beat him. The first goal arrived when Tully beat Little and slipped a pass through to Collins whose shot spun off of Caldow to beat Niven. Baird was warned for a bad foul on Fernie but generally the game was clean though full of the usual barging and pulling characteristic of the mid-50's. The first half was lively and full of action with both sets of players eager and willing to play attractive football in difficult conditions. Tully's ball play was magnificent fashioning chances for Mochan and Haughney.
Celtic switched the order of the forwards at half time with Smith at right half and Fernie and Collins on the right and Tully at inside left. Again they started brightly but after a Haughney – Collins – Tully move in the 51st minute Rangers gained the upper hand and went on to score in the 54th. McColl's low left foot shot from the edge of the penalty area was dummied by Simpson and the ball went through Fallon's legs and past the unsighted Beattie. Seven minutes from the end Haughney in attempting to reach a Tully pass struck Niven with his boot but luckily the keeper was able to continue.
