Trivia
- With Stein still injured and Evans having to play at centre half, the right half position became troublesome. For this game John Reid was tried. The forward line was again rejigged. Jim Sharkey came in for a first team debut at centre forward and Mike Haughney dropped out. McVittie was restored at inside right with Fernie and Tully over on the left side.
- Celtic had appealed to the Scottish League for the postponement and rearrangement of their next fixture on the 8th October against Hearts as Evans, Collins and Peacock would all be away at the Scotland – Ireland international. In the end they withdrew their request and the game went on as scheduled. The League initially agreed to their request but said that they would have to play the game on the next Wednesday, when in fact they would still be down two players with Evans and Collins away with the Scottish League team against Denmark.
- On the same day of this game the League Cup semi finals were played between Rangers v Aberdeen and Motherwell v St Mirren.
Review
Sharkey proved to be a success on his debut and on seven minutes in a move started by Collins he dummied over a cross to allow the ball to run to better placed McVittie, who duly scored. McLure of Raith picked up an injury during the first half and despite treatment spent most of the game limping. As Raith picked up more injuries Celtic came more and more into the game without scoring. A good ebut by Sharkey was capped by a goal three minutes from time.
