For Hearts, Willie Bauld returned after injury for his first game.
- James Rowan played in only his second match, but also to be his last for Celtic.
- The game was played in a strong wind with Hearts playing agfainst the wind in the first half.
- Jock Stein was improving and back in training but not risked in this game.
Review
Hearts started well but there were no real shots from either team till 25 minutes had passed. Hearts scored when Urquhart deflected a Bauld shot past Beattie. They got a second just before half time from a Conn header.
Celtic switched Tully and Rowan in the second half. Fallon picked up an injury in the second half. Celtic were being pushed back by numerous Hearts attacks. Fernie scored from a deft piece of Tully movement and Celtic reinvigorated tried hard for an equaliser but were unable to make a final goal.
