Trivia
- Sean Fallon dropped out at left back with Frank Meechan going across to cover and Alec Boden coming back in at right back; the rest of the team remained the same from the previous 3-0 win over St Mirren.
- This game was viewed with interest. Airdrie were undefeated in six weeks and Celtic were on a run of seven games without defeat. Ideal conditions prevailed for the game with a good pitch underfoot. The game was played with the lighter white ball.
- Elsewhere Hibernian met Djurgarden of Sweden in the second round of the European Cup at Firhill in a floodlit game, the first floodlit European game seen in Glasgow. Hibernian won 3-1 and went to Sweden for the second leg with a good chance of progressing to the semi-finals.
Review
Airdrie ended up conviningly beaten by Celtic with McCulloch getting a consolation goal two minutes from time. Airdrie started well but McMillan missed a penalty on 25 minutes and that changed the tone of the game. Fernie had an outstanding second half with mazy runs and clever passing. Airdrie lacked the penetration of the Celtic forwards but played well in midfield and in defense. But the superlative skill of the Celtic forward line put paid to Airdrie's hopes after the penalty miss and once they had gained the initiative they failed to give it up. Mochan scored on the hour when his speculative shot into a crowded goal mouth spun in off a defender. Sharkey got the second with another superlative goal from the young centre forward when he beat two defenders and shot high into the roof of the net.
