- Tully was finally back in the side after being out since November. Stein was out carrying both the chronic ankle injury but also having picked up a groin strain. Alec Boden came in but this time at centre half with Bobby Evans staying at right half. Jimmy Walsh dropped out for Tully. Sean Fallon was still out with an ankle injury.
- The freeze continued in Scotland with teams training on frozen pitches during the week. For the game the Cappielow pitsh was awash in places with visible standing water at the south-west end of the pitch including the goal mouth. celtic played in the away strip of green shirt, white sleeves with the shamrock on the breast. Bobby Evans captained the side in the absence of Jock Stein.
Review
Simpson of Morton was almost immediately injured. The large quantoits of standing water inhibited play and passing. Tully had the ball in the net early only to be given offside. Morton had a claim for a penalty when Boden swept away the legs of Tommy Orr. Tully scored the first goal from a chip from Sharkey. Collins added a second on 35 minutes from a Mochan cross. The amount of water on the pitch definetly hampered any kind of decent play and was in some instances a hazard to the players. Sharkey received a ball in the face and retired with a cut reducing the game to ten men each. In the second half a Tommy Orr shot came off the underside of the bar and raised a splash in the goalmouth puddle of the Celtic goal. The Morton players claimed for a goal but the referee was having none of it.
