Trivia
- Billy McPhail was out with a knee strain and Jimmy Walsh came in for his first game of the season at centre forward; Charlie Tully was also out with a thigh injury and Eric Smith stepped in at outside left. For Dunfermiline George Peebles on leave from the RAF was at outside right with McWilliam going to centre forward.
- Jock Stein had a further X-Ray on his ankle and the results were less than encouraging. He was walking without a stick but limping quite badly (something that Jock would have for the rest of his life). No final decision had been made on his future but a great deal of speculation was going the rounds that he would probably retire from playing.
Review
Dunfermiline fought back from being 6 goals in arrears but could not make up the large deficit from the first leg. Collins and Walsh combined well in the early stages. Dunfermiline's first goal arrived when Beattie failed to hold a shot from McWilliam and Anderson tapped home. The second half saw concerted Dunfermiline pressure and they hit the post twice before Anderson netted from a free kick after half an hour. Reilly got a third five minutes from time. A very plucky fight back by Dunfermiline but Celtic were through to the semi final for the first time since 1951 and would face Clyde at Hampden.
