Trivia
- John Higgins and Billy McPhail had both recovered and came back in. Mochan moved back across to the left wing with Jimmy Walsh losing out and Eric Smith back with the Army. Charlie Tully failed a fitness test on the morning of the game.
- For once the game was not made an all-ticket game, however attendance was limited by the work going on around the ground to get the stands and terraces fully covered. The limit was said to be 50,000. Entrance was on a first come – first served basis with the possibility that the gates would be locked once the limit was reached.
- All the players wore black armbands and the flags were at half mast in memory of past Rangers manager Bill Struth who died the day before after a period of illness. There was also a 30 second silence before kick off.
Review
Celtic attacked from the off and Collins had a fair shot which was wide. At the other end Beattie misjudged a shot from Logie from 25 yards out which swirled in the wind and hit the crossbar with Beattie panicking. Rangers were making ground with long range accurtae passing wheras the Celtic game was based on speed and short passing. From a long crossfield pass Muuray scored the first goal with a strong header. Hubbard beat Fallon on the resatart and his shot hit the post and Beattie made a great save before half time to deny Grierson. Celtic fought back on the restart but with Rangers packing the defense there was no way through for the Celtic forwards and half backs. Rangers got a second goal when Scott picked up a pass from Grierson and after ploughing his way through the middle, shot and scored.Baird was allowed to foul his way though the first half by referee Davidson.
