- A 7:00pm kick off in a floodlit game. Middlesbrough had recently played Hibernian in a floodlit game and had been beaten 5-0. Celtic took a trsavelling partty of 13 players down to Teeside for the game. These were Ryan, Fernie, Fallon, Peacock, Beattie, Smith, McPhail, Evans, Mochan, Collins, Wilson, Meechan and Donnelly.
- The Royal Scots Grey's Pipe band entertained the crowd before and at half time.
- Collins damaged his ankle during the game and was doubtful for the game against Clyde.
- Rangers were away in Milan playing the second leg of their second round European Cup game against AC Milan. They had lost the first leg at Ibrox 4-1. They lost this one 2-0 to go out with an aggregate score of 6-1 against them.
Review
Middlebrough were being coached by Scot Jimmy Gordon who had played for Newcastle and Middlesbrough, and managed by Bob Dennison. After the 5-0 tanking by Hibs, his instructions to his team were to go out and shoot, shoot, shoot.
