Trivia
- An all-ticket game.
- Celtic were unchanged from the side that faced Raith Rovers the previous week. Sammy Wilson had picked up a knee knock against Raith Rovers but had recovered enough to play.
- Celtic announced that they would play Shettleston Juniors in a Friendly in April to celebrate the opening of their new pavillion. They also announced a floodlit game against Dumbarton at Boghead as a benefit in aid of the relatives of Jim Mclean, a well known and respected official of Duntocher Hibs, who had recently died.
Review
A strong rally by Airdrie saw them come back from a four goal deficit to loose by the single goal, with Beattie pulling out a miracle save towards the end to save the replay. Beattie performed magnificently in goal wheras Goldie for Airdrieonians had a bit of an off day with two of the goals down to errors by the goalkeeper.
Collins got the first with a cross come shot which was misjudged by the keeper. Fernie made it two with a shot that trundled over the line after a handling error by Goldie. Byrne with an accurate piece of ball control got the third when he took the defense on and then beat Goldie at his near post when the keeper was expecting the ball to be pulled back from the bye line. Byrne grabbed a fourth with a well taken shot in the second half.
Celtic had a penalty in the second half but Mochan hit the ball straight at the keeper. Fernie had a recurrence of the knee injury and spent a lot of the half out of the game. McGill pulled two back and in the 80th minute Celtic, in the form of Peacock, were penalised for hauling back Rankin and McMillan put the spot kick away.
This set up a nervy finish and Beattie had to be at the peak of his game to keep Celtic ahead.
McMillan and Fallon duelled all game with the Airdrie man generally being the winner. Evans as ever was magnificent in his positioning and defensive capabilities. Alec Byrne had an excellent game but the other forwards generally misfired.
