Trivia
- Celtic had been due to play Queen of the South away on February 8th. However a massive fall of snow on the night of the 7th/8th made virtually every ground in Scotland unplayable and all the games were called off.
- An unchanged team for Celtic. Billy McPhail was fit to play but it was decided not to risk him in this game.
- Celtic transferred Vince Ryan to St Mirren on 7th February. The transfer fee was around £2000.
- Although Celtic did not yet have a floodlit ground, they had erected some floodlighting at the Janefield Street end of the ground for training at night, and this was used regularly by the Reserves and youths to train under the watchful eye of Jock Stein.
- John Higgins was finally given the OK to begin outside training again after missing all the season through knee injuries.
- Elsewhere the Munich air disaster occurred on the 6th February 1958, when a returning Manchester Utd team of Busby Babes crashed killing seven, including Duncan McKay. RIP
Review
Stirling opened the scoring after six minutes on their first attack. Eric Smith replied for Celtic, his first coming from a Mochan cross and his second when he lobbed the keeper from a long way out and the keeper allowed the ball to squirm through his fingers under close attendance from Sammy Wilson. Mochan made it 3-1 before half time from a Collins cross.
Stirling started the second half well and pulled a second goal back. This seemed to spur the Hoops on and they added a further four goals – 2 a piece from Wilson and Byrne.
This was Celtic’s first home win since 2nd November.
