Trivia
- Despite this being a home game for Clyde, the game was played at Celtic Park as there were fears for the game being played at Shawfield following the disaster there in the last game against the two teams when a wall collapsed killing one and injuring 50. The game was very much treated as an 'away' game by Celtic and the stand tickets were initially reserved for Clyde ticket holders with Celtic tickets inelligible.
- In a part tactical, part injury reshuffle with Billy McPhail again succumbing to injury, Willie Fernie was moved up front with Eric Smith moving back to right half, Alec Byrne went to centre forward again for the injured McPhail and Neil Mochan came back in on the left wing. McPhail trained in the snow with the rest of the team following the Kilmarnock game but he was subsequently injured in training and failed to make the game despite the injury being less severe than the knee strain which had kept him out through January.
- Snow again hit Scotland in the week before the game with the worst blizzard since 1947 being recorded and trains delayed and cancelled. Early spring sunshine however had cleared away the snow by the Saturday of the game.
Review
A rousing 65,000 crowd accepted the chance of seeing an away Cup tie at Celtic Park. Celtic lost two goals in twenty five minutes and despite going on the attack failed to break down the Clyde defense in which the full back pairing of Haddock and Murphy were excellent. They lost a first goal on ten minutes to a wonder strike from Tommy Ring. Celtic were also unlucky and McCulloch in the Clyde goal escaped by the skin of his teeth on more than one occasion. They failed to get the decision in the first half when Walters appeared to handle in the box. Evans as ever was exceptional for Celtic with his defensive awareness. As the game wore on Celtic became more desperate and looser in their play. Smith and Peacock both went into attack leaving the back line open top counter attacks by Clyde.
