Trivia

  • Bertie Peacock was again fit after a knee knock, and had in fact played for Ireland on the 9th in a 0-0 draw with Wales in Belfast. He came back in at his accustomed place at left half with Mike Conroy dropping out.
  • Partick Thistle went into the match strongly favoured here. They had the stingiest defense in the league at this point in the season and had given away one goal in their last four games. Though it looked as though the league was over (and Hearts winning against St Mirren made that a certainty) there was still 'talent' money to play for. This was an extra bonus paid to the top four finishers in the League at the end of the season, with Celtic sitting third and Partick fourth at this point.
  • Three farmed out provisional Celtic players were making their names with Maryhill Harp. John Colquhoun would not play for the first team but his son would; Roy Paton would eventually make a first team debut and Joe Logan would not have his option taken up.
  • The forty players to represent Scotland in the upcoming World Cup were selected. Dick Beattie, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins and Willie Fernie were all selected.

Review

A thrilling game saw Celtic take the points by a single goal. Much of the passing of both sides was inaccurate but this made for open play with much counter-attacking. Thistle played better in the first half but were beaten time and again by the solid pairing of Bertie Peacock and Bobby Evans. It took till the seventy third minute for the goal to come despite Celtic being dominant in the second half. Thistle protested the goal saying that Sammy Wilson had impeded their goalkeeper but the goal stood. Meechan and Collins were also highlighted for their contributions to the game.
