- John Jack came in for Bobby Evans and Mike Conrot for bertie Peacock. Both the two reguklars were away on international duty with thew Scotland senior side. Also called up for the Scotland U23 team who were due to play their English counterparts at Hampden were Dick Beattie and John Colrain.
- In world events, Sputnik 2 with the dog Laika on board had been entertaining people as the second man-made earth satellite, and the first with as living occupant, since its launch on November 3rd, finally burnt up in a fiery trail on re-entering Earth's atmosphere on the 14th April. The dog had probably survived for about 12 days before using up the supply of oxygen onboard. The heavens were now home to three unmanned American satellites launched at the beginning of this year.
