Trivia
- A Wednesday night game, Celtic played with an unchanged team.
- Celtic qualuified for the Quarter Finals with a game in hand.
- Billy McPhail was duly seen by the orthapaedic specialist at the Royal. The problem was allegedly not only with the knee which sustained the injury in the pre-season trial, but also with his ankle which had been injured first during his time with Clyde. The injury was now chronic and debilitating. The decision on his future was put off.
- Following his back strain against Clyde on the 20th August and attempts to recover through rest, Bobby Evans was admitted to the Victoria Infirmary when he was still suffering from pain.
- In British events, the Notting Hill race riots occurred on the 29th August in the London district and on the week following petering out on the 5th September. Nine youths were convicted in September and were given exemplary punishments of 5 years jail and £500 fines.
Review
Celtic started well and established a two goal lead by half time. The second from Conway came from a header from an Auld cross and marked his 18th Birthday. The first goal from Bertie Peacock was a 25 yard shot that put pay to Airdrie's early good form. Airdrie however fought back in the second ghalf and twice missed open goals. McGill scored for them and the final 18 minutes were tense.
With one game to play against St Mirren and Clyde hammering St Mirren in the other game of this group on the night, Celtic were duly qualified gfor the Quarter Finals.
