Trivia

  • The second leg of the game away. Celtic held a 2-0 lead from the first game. The game kicked off at 5:40 pm
  • Apart from switching Eric Smith and Willie Ferie there were no changes to the side that beat Kilmarnock in the League on the preceding Saturday. Beattie who had taken a thight knock against Kilmarnock was fit and played.
  • Celtic were drawn against Partick Thistle in the semis, to be played at Ibrox on 1st October.
  • Sean Fallon was back in light training and Matt McVittie was due to have the plaster removed from his broken arm.
  • Elsewhere Partick Thistle were away to Arbroath and drew 1-1. At three in the morning a fire was spotted at the Gayfield ground and despite efforts from the fire services the west and central sections of the main stand were burnt down including the changing rooms, treatment rooms and games officials rooms taking with it all Arbroath's kit. Two hampers with Partick's kit were pulled from the fire , not, allegedly, because they refused to catch fire.

Review

Celtic outclassed the Fifers and played exhibition pass and shoot football. Praise was heaped on Duncan MacKay and Billy McNeill for their excellent defending. John Colrain reminded some viewers of John McPhail both in build and his manner of play. Sammy Wilson scored first and Bertie Auld supplied the cross for Colrain to get his first. Celtic went six goals up by half time with a devastating four goal spell with two more from Wilson, a bullet from Auld and an own goal after Fernie had bamboozled the defense. They took the foot off the gas in the second half adding only two more to end up with a 8-1 win and 10-1 progression on aggregate to the semi finals. Billy McNeill came off the field before the end of the game, with a back strain.
