Trivia
- Billy McNeill failed to shake off a back strain picked up in the League Cup game against Cowdenbeath and his place was taken by John Jack.
Review
Raith started the match well but the Celtic defense kept them from scoring. Celtic gradually worked themselves into the game and Wuilson very nearly scored in the tenth minute. In the thirteenth minute a Bertie Peacock free kick was headed on by Tully to Fernie who scored. Tully was weaving his usual magic for Celtic. Beattie still needed to be alert in the Celtic goal and on 23 minutes McEwan beat him with a shot from 20 yards. Thorburn was much the busier of the two keepers but at half time it was even still at one a piece.
In the 64th minute Celtic took the lead again from Tully inspired play. He won a free kick on the Raith dead ball line and taking the kick himself he passed to Smith who shot through a forest of players to score. An error from Raith four minutes later presented Fernie with the ball and he shot home.
