- The replay at Shawfield on the Monday with a 5:30pm kick off following the 1-1 draw at Celtic Park the previous Wednesday. Clyde’s floodlights were on from the start.
- Clyde were unchanged for the replay; for Celtic, McVittie reverted to the right wing with a fit Bertie Auld back on the left wing, Colrain was moved out of his centre forward spot – a position which he had been most effective in and brought others into play, to make way for senior debutant Ian Lochhead at centre forward, Divers was dropped and Sammy Wilson retained at inside left.
- Rumours were circulating that goalkeeper Dick Beattie had put in a transfer request but these were unconfirmed from the club. Beattie had lost his starting place in the first team following a rather disastrous showing against Motherwell in January.
- Slightly further away, a Court of Sessions ruling in Edinburgh saw the court declare a will written on the back of a Christmas card leaving his estate of £15,000 entirely to his son, to be valid. Willie Maley had died in April 1958 and his original will had deeded his estate to be held by trustees. Maley had been in failing health and from October 1957 had been in a nursing home and his mental state such that he was not aware of what he was doing. His son maintained that up to a few days before his death he was in full control of his mental faculties and the will on the Christmas card was therefore valid. The judge and court agreed.
Review
A tremendous game of football by all accounts. There was doubt about McVittie’s goal (Celtic’s second to level at 2-2) with some seeing him a yard offside. Clyde took the lead three times and Celtic matched them each time. It was 3-3 after ninety minutes and extra time was played.
After a minute of extra time there was a power failure plunging the ground into darkness. On restoration Celtic were awarded a free kick 30 yds out. Up stepped Bertie Peacock and hit a curling shot which fooled the goalkeeper and crashed in off the right hand post to put Celtic in front for the first time in the match.
Robertson got the first for Clyde with an ankle-high shot on 22 minutes. Celtic replied four minutes later when Wilson won the ball and burst through the Clyde back line to put the ball away. Back came Clyde two minutes later and White scored and on 30 minutes
McVittie collected the ball and went on to score. The linesman flagged offside against McVittie but the referee chose to play on. Ring, who had been wasteful all game despite seeing a fair share of the Clyde attacks, put Clyde ahead again 8 minutes into the second half only for Wilson to square it again.
Ian Lochhead, the new centre forward had an anonymous first half but a far better second and showed good speed. He needed attention for cramp four times during the game and was off the pitch having attention when Peacock scored the winner. Haffey too produced some superb saves to keep Celtic in the game late in the second half
