Trivia
- Much was expected in this game. The team had made notable progress from the season's opener and though it was highly unlikely given the previous result that Celtic would qualify for the quarter finals it was important to continue with the progress so far seen.
- Mike Jackson was back fir and came back in at inside right; Dan O'Hara crossed to inside left and Charlie Gallacher missed out.
- Bertie Auld finally appeared before the SFA Disciplinary Committee after they had received further evidence from FIFA, following Bertie's sending off in the international against Holland in May. He received a 'severe censure'.
- A Wednesday evening kick off at 6:45 pm. Both Partick Thistle and Celtic wore black arambands and there was a minute's silence before kick off to pay respects to the late David Meiklejohn of Partick.
- With Raith Rovers beating Airdrie 3-0 they were guaranteed qualification from the group with one match still to play.
Review
Celtic emerged as winner and hauled themselves off the bottom of their group table. Far from a perfect performance, this however showed that Celtic will and fight and skill were back and their. Both Kennedy and McNeill were eager to get forward and link with the attackers. Auld was back towards his best and Conway, O'Hara and Jackson all worked tirelessly. Jackson knew little about the firsat goal which came from a chipped in Auld cross which was then fired back into the centre by McVittie. The second goal is given in the report below as coming from O'Hara.
