Trivia
- The Scotland team to face the Scottish League on 2nd February was announced. Bobby Evans was selected as captain and centre half. Frank Haffey was also selected as reserve goalkeeper. Duncan MacKay was listed for the Scottish League. In the end neither MacKay or Evans played but Haffey was in goal for Sctland in a 2-2 draw.
- The game was interesting for Everton's Anglo-Scots who would have a chance to change the minds of the Scotland selectors. Parker at right back duly impressed the selectors and played himself into the Scotland team.
- Jimmy McGrory stated that he would field his strongest side. As such an unchanged side from the one that had beaten Arbroath 40-0 was fielded.
- Stirling Albion manager Alex McCrae made a bid to take John Colrain to the Binos. Colrain was stuill considered a Celtic centre forward but he was out of the first team of late and travelling reserve.
- The teams had last met in the 1938 Exhibition Cup Final, when Celtic had also won by the same score.
Review
A large crowd turned up for this rather dull game. What had been expected was a fast and active Everton but they appeared to be running at half speed. Haffey, Evans and Crerand played well and Crerand and MacKay were able to snuff out Everton's Anglo-Scottish left side attack of Collins and Ring. The goal came from a Neil Mochan cross which Carroll met on the volley the ball going in off the underside of the bar and the far post
