Trivia

  • Celtic returned 1000 tickets of their allocation for the game to Elgin City. Given the eitement and the size of the crowds at the last three games in the Second Round against St. Mirren, and th distance to travel up to Elgin for the away tie, this was hardly surprising.
  • The draw for the next round had already been made with the winners of this game going on to play Partick Thistle at home.
  • Mochan was passed fit despite carrying a leg knock from the previous cup game against St. Mirren. Bertie Auld was still unfit but getting there and played for the reserves against Hibs reserves, losing 3-1. the team was Fallon, Donnelly, Upton, Crerand, Kurila, Clark, Carroll, Jackson, Lochhead, Gallacher, Auld.

Review

Described by the ever 'loyal' Gair Henderson in the Evening Times as '…a let off for Celtic'.
Very much a partisan home highland crowd with only 700 travelling Celtic support. Elgin started well and it required all the attention of Evans to snap out several attacks. Celtic's attack finally started and Divers and Mochan both had attempts. Elgin played a high line and Celtic's forwards were being caught offside when the breaks occurred. Jenkins too, in the Elgin goal was having a hero's day making wonder saves from Colrain and Smith to keep it goalless.
The second half saw Elgin City come out with real belief that they could win the tie and Celtic were pinned back. This valiant effort had taken its toll and with the highlanders visibly tiring Celtic began to get more of the game. Celtic however had reverted to the profligates in front of goal that they had been at the start of the season. Even Mochan missed with a shot that seemed to be a certain goal. Elgin got their just desserts on 65 minutes when Grant scored from a shot parried by Haffey. Cue highland madness.
However it was not to be. In a tacticalitch pushed on by bertie Peacock, Eric Smith moved over to the left, switching with Alec Byrne and started to combine well with Divers. Divers went on to score from a Smith cross and just before the end Smith fired home a suoperb shot to get Celtic out of the highland jail.
