Trivia

  • Celtic were drawn against Rangers in the semi final of the Scottish Cup. The game was to be played at Hampden Park. The other semi was between Clyde and Kilmarnock. An initial 30,000 griound cap was placed but this was soon revived to 90,000 as the game was at Hampden, but the game would be all-ticket
  • Bertie Auld was out following his ankle injury in the cup against Partick Thistle. Also succumbing to the back injury was Neil Mochan. His place was taken by Jim Conway and finally Billy McNeill had to withdraw with an ankle injury and his place was taken by Pat Crerand.
  • An agreement was reached finally between the television companies and the SFA on the live televising of games. The argument had been rumbling on for some time and in best SFA traditions a separate sub-committee had been set up to investigate the whole matter. The following proposals were put to the BBC and STV and appeared to be agreed by the television companies:-
    • No indications of the games or the scores to be made before 5:00 pm
    • The TV companies needed to spread the televised games around all the clubs, not just the most attractive fixtures
    • A review of the upcoming Saturay football should be screened on Friday evening.

The senior SFA representative on the negotiations was Mr Robert Kelly, the Celtic chairman. In his opinion there should be NO televising of games at all.

  • The biggest news though was the move of Jock Stein from Reserve Coach at Celtic to become the new manager at Dunfermiline./ Dunfermiline were next to bottom in Division 1 and had sacked their manager McRae. Jock Stein took the job on to keep them up and immediately put every player at the club on trial on the Monday evening that he took over.
  • This game was played on the Wednesday night and marked the start of a busy period for Celtic with four games in 10 days.
  • Denis Law was transferred from Huddersfield Town to manchester City for an alleged fee of £53,000.

Review

A poor game by all accounts with both goals coming from half backs from free kicks. Celtic had the better midfield but Bobby Evans had a less than good second half and allowed the Ayr centre Price in several times. Ayr’s goal came from a back-heeled free kick which Willie McIntyre rocketed home. Celtic’s goal came from a Crerand free on the edge of the box after Paterson had handled.
