Trivia
- First round of the Glasgow Cup played at Celtic Park with a 7:15pm kick off.
- Rangers were unchanged from their opening game against Partick Thistle in the League Cup. Celtic delayed their team selection till just before the tie. Eventually Bertie Auld was declared fit from the leg injury that had affected his pre-season and John Hughes made way with the left side all moving in one.
- Rangers were the Glasgow Cup holders.
Review
Celtic played well with Crerand and Kennedy in particular and the whole half back line doing well to snuff out any threat. Sean Fallon's new training regime of work with the ball appeared to be paying off as the passing was smart and accurate. The Rangers back line found it hard to cope with the movement of the Celtic inside forwards. Divers started a move for the first goal and just managed to get his head to the returned Auld lob to the far corner of the net. Millar got the first goal for Rangers on 18 minutes. Chalmers finished off a good move to put Celtic in front. Haffey saved a penalty in the second half when the score was 2-1. Then in a final flurry Divers scored the goal of the game, Millar headed a goal for Rangers and Davis headed into his own net right at the end.
