Trivia

  • Calls had been made for the game to be postponed following disturbances outside the ground after the League Cup game the previous weekend where Rangers beat Celtic 1-2 to go through to the quarter finals of the League Cup. Instead greater efforts would be made to disperse the crowds separately after the game. Buses taking supporters tom the ground had to identify themselves with coloured discs in the windscreen; pink for Rangers, white for Celtic.
  • With both Auld and Haffey having recovered from injuries the Celtic management were in a quandary whether to play them. In the end they were left out; back in after international duty was Pat Crerand, Stevie Chalmers returned at inside right.
  • This was a young Celtic front line with Chalmers the oldest at 23 and Hughes the youngest at 17.
  • Rangers were unchanged from the side that had won the league Cup meeting the previous week.

Review

Rangers got an early goal through Scott but for an hour afterwards it was pretty even play. However when Rangers scored a second goal after ten minutes into the second half Celtic dropped and Rangers romped home. Two goals followed blunders by Fallon in goal and a further goal came when Kurila instead of clearing his lines was robbed of the ball. Conway and Carroll were switched half way through the second half without making any difference to the penetration of the Celtic attack. The first goal came when Fallon punched straight to the feet of Scott who promptly scored. In an even first half Chalmers hit both crossbar and post. Kurila was caught for the second. Fallon mishandled the third for Brand tio score. Wilson shot home for the fourth and Davis headed the fifth before Chalmers got a consolation goal just before the whistle.
