Trivia

  • Following Celtic's revival with the return of Willie Fernie the papers were full of how Celtic's policy of belief in youth was correct, whilst before they had been full about the 'death-knell' for Celtic unless they bought some tried and trusted professionals in. No change then in the fickleness of the Press between the 60's and now.
  • The second leg of the Anglo-French-Scottish Friendship Cup Friendly. Celtic had lost the first leg away in France 3-0 back in August. Back in for Celtic came captain Peacock who missed the game against Hibs away on international duty.

Review

Most of the talk about this game was how it most certainly was not anything but friendly. Sedan scored first in the second minute with a cheeky back heel from their cenrtre forward but this was cancelled out a minute later with a goal from Divers. The French club then packed their goal mouth and used every tactic possible to maintain their aggregate lead. Four of the French players were booked as well as Bertie Auld, this despite referee Syme bending over backwards to give the French the benefit of the doubt. Haffey and McNeill had shaky moments for Celtic and the two other Sedan goals came from defensive mistakes. Bertie Auld missed a penalty. The game was played in an orgy of fouling, tugging, pulling and pushing.
