Trivia

  • Pat Crerand, who had been carrying a groin injury all through the previous game against Ayr Utd. surprised everyone by making a sdharp recovery and was training on the Monday – perhaps bravado against caution as he was out for the game and in came Mike Jackson.
  • Raith came into the game on the back of four successive defeats.
  • Scotland appointed ex-Ranger Ian McColl as international manager. He would also continue to be on Rangers books.
  • Outside of football it was announced that a floating dock / replenishing ship would be established in Holy Loch for American nuclear Polaris submarines. It then transpired that there was an agreement that the Americans could launch Polaris missiles from Holy Loch. The Labour Party in opposition were divided in their response because of the schism within the party between those in favour of unilateral nuclear disarmament and those against.

Review

Celtic played wekll and could have been ahead early with Carroll laying on an early ball for Chalmers which left back Mochan just managed to get to. Divers and Chalmers had efforts saved and Raith looked panic scared as soon as these two got the ball. The first goal came from Fernie who played the ball out to Auld and rocketed the ball into the roof of the net when he received it back. Matthews and Spence had chances for Raith. They were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute when Jackson took out Kelly. Matthews took the kick which Haffey brilliantkly saved low to his right. The half time score was 1-0 to Celtic.
The second half saw Raith come alive and pull ahead with 2 goals from Spence. Chalmers evened up the odds before the end and the points were shared.
