Trivia
- On the 21st Celtic had been due to face Dundee in a rearranged fixture. The game was again called off due to a frozen pitch aftyer a very sharp frost. The game was rearranged again for Boxing Day with a 3pm kick off.
- Both Fernie and Hughes were out injured for this game, and Bertie Auld was also rested allowing Bobby Carroll to come back in at outside right where he had been recently tried in the Reserves. It also allowed Johnny Kelly a rare start at centre forward (his league debut) and Alec Byrne came in on the left wing.
- The ground had unfrozen but the pitch was soggy and likely to cut up.
Review
A Johnny Divers goal on ten minutes put the Celts in front. Motherwell's goalkeeper was penalised for carrying the ball outside the area and an indirect free kick awarded. Peacock tapped it to Divers who rocketed it home. Motherwell were shocked and pressed the Celtic goal and Haffey had to be alert and make some decent saves. Both keepers were busy in fact and McNeill was having a game and a half. Kelly was easily kept in check by Martis.
In the second half the game went off the boil somewhat though both sides appeared to wake up towards the end and each had chances, but the game finished 1-0 to the Celtic and the Bhoys had their first two-pointer since the end of October.
