Trivia

  • In a further move to beat the Professional Footballers Association call for a strike on 21st january, the Football League called on all clubs to rearrange their fixtures of the 21st to the Friday the 20th. Desp[ite appearing to have come to an agreement between the players and the League clubs, the League were determined to stave off the threat of a strike by the players to forego making drastic changes in the wage and contracft structure of players south of the border.
  • The tyeam sniffing around the transfer of Bertie Auld was Everton. Manager John carey had watched the previous game against Aberdeen. As yet they had tabled no firm offer but the bold bertie had been withdrawn from games before the Ne'erday game. Blackpool were also interested in signing the bold Bertie. They got as far as tabling a bid for £15,000 but in the end he did not want to leave. Fulham then made a late bid to take him south.
  • Alec Byrne again visited a specialist to check on the progress of his shopulder injury recovery. He picked up the injury against Rangers in the Ne'erday game.
  • Billy McNeill captained the Scotland U23 side against the Second Division Select at Brockville. The U23s won 10-2. Paddy Crerand was a non-playing reserve.
  • Charlie Tully handed in a transfer request to Cork Hibernian – then withdrew it, saying he would be happy to see out the rest of the season having reconsidered his position.
  • The only change to the side was John Clark coming in for Bertie Peacock, who had to withdraw with a boil on his leg. Duncan MacKay captained the side for the game.
  • The pitch for the game was well sanded and looked more like a beach.

Review

Chalmers is credited with the initial goal in early reports.
Hughes had a shot cleared off the line in the first minuite and Chalmers a goal ruled out for offside in three. Divers got the first goal. Charlie Gallacher had probably his finest game to date with the accuracy of his passing and he made both the third and fourth goals for Chalmers and Crerand. Every one of the forwards had a decent game but Gallacher was a standout. behind the forwards the backs and half backs were so strong that they easily blotted out the Airdrie attacks with Kennedy and Clark being particularly effective. Airdrie were outclassed and only Leslie in goal prevented it from becoming a rout.
