Trivia
- Celtic had been due to play Motherwell at Fir Park on 30th December, but atrocious weather of snow, ice and fog caused the postponement of much of the Scottish programme for that day. Similarly the Neerday Celtic v Rangers game also had to be called off with a frozen pitch at Celtic Park. The SFA after due consideration of all the fixture postponements suggested playing the game in the week following 15th January making the Wednesday night the favourite. Neither club were happy with this arrangement.
- On the Thursday before this game there was very little prospect of it going ahead. However despite the intense cold, the sun shone and the pitch was declared playable and the game on.
- Celtic were unchanged but Kilmarnock completely rejigged their front line.
Review
A tight game. Haffey really had an up and down game. He saved wonderfully from McIllroy and Kerr before Celtic scored then failed to cut out a cross to allow Killie to equalise. He then went on to make a series of brilliant saves before committing a further blunder at the end to allow Killie to equalise for the second time.
In the mean time Carroll got Celtic's opener with a low shot through a melee of players from 25 yards out. Kerr's equaliser came when MacKay tried to head a ball back to Haffey and had it pinched out of his hands by the Killie player. Chalmers scored a very good goal in the second half which Forsyth was unable to do anything about. Celtic then piled on the pressure but to no extra gain and Killie were always looking for the fast long ball break downfield. When their equaliser came it was from a Kerr free kick which was headed home by McIllroy when Haffey should have had it covered.
