Trivia
- Johnny Kelly, Morton's right half was still officially a Celtic player but was on loan to the Greenock side. Morton had two players come over from Ireland – goalkeeper Flood and inside right Turner, and two players returned from National Service in Germany – Ferguson and McGraw,.
- Duncan MacKay was carrying a foot injury sustained in the previous game against Motherwell.
- Celtic had four players selected for the Scottish League to play a trial against the reserves. They were Jim Kennedy, Pat Crerand, Steve Chalmers and Bobby Carroll. The big surprises were the omission of Billy McNeill and Duncan MacKay.
- After the game finished the Celtic supporters let loose a hail of bottles onto the track beside the pitch at Cappielow according to reports on the Monday.
Review
Not quite the easy walkover that had been expected. Morton fought well and after being somewhat overwhelmed at the start they got stuck in, defending well when needed and attacking when they could. Celtic's opener came when a misdirected Chalmers shot was headed home by Carroll. Morton picked up an equaliser on 36 minutes and the remaining half was tense.
Morton started the second with plenty of confidence and Haffey had to work hard. Celtic's second came when Divers latched onto a poor pass back and score. Jackson added a third goal before the end to ease the nerves.
