- The first game of the new season. The Celtic players had reported back for training on 17th July. All the Celtic players had re-signed new contract however Mike Jackson had at first refused when he was handed only a £20./week part-time contract. When this was changed he duly re-signed. The players were offered a total of £36/week including a win bonus There were two public open trials played on the 4th and the 7th August and 34 players took part in the second trial.
- Celtic had been made an offer of a guaranteed £15,000 to make a 6-game tour of Australia in 1963. The club were discussing the offer.
- Billy McNeill was appointed captain taking over from Duncan MacKay; John Higgins and Alec Boden were working as trainers at Celtic Park; Jimmy Gribben was Assistant Trainer, Bob Rooney was coach, Sean Fallon Assistant Manager and Jimmy McGrory continued as manager.
- MacKay, Crerand, McNeill, Hughes and Divers were selected in a Glasgow side to face Manchester Utd at Hampden on the 8th August in the newly re-formatted Glasgow Charities Cup. This changed to a one-off invitation game. The change of format must have been popular with over 60,000 people turning up for the game which saw Manchester Utd win 4-2.
- Mike Jackson was out with a leg strain.
- This was the game in which Johnny Divers turned up at the ground due to play but minus his boots, and was promptly dropped for Charlie Gallacher. Bobby Murdoch made his first team debut.
Review
The game was played in windy conditions.
Celtic opened the scoring when Murdoch shot past Marshall from close range. Paton equalised for Hearts with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Two minutes after the interval Gallacher put Celtic ahead with a goal similar to Paton's. Hughes finished it off with a touch in from a Byrne free kick.
