- Celtic reverted to their 'League Cup' side with Lennox, Gallacher and Murdoch restored to the front line; also fit again Billy Price returned at left half. Hearts fielded an unchanged side.
- In the Reserve League Cup, the 'A' Reserves beat Hearts 'A' 3-0 and were top of their group. The team was Fallon, Young, O'Neill, Clark, Cushley, Bobby Symington, Chalmers, Carroll, John Veitch, Jackson, Brogan. The younger Reserves played in the Combined Reserve league against Queen's Park losing 3-2. - Bertie Auld handed in a transfer request at Birmingham saying he wanted to return to Scotland. His name was circulated around all the Scottish clubs. Although still full of the game he had been out of the Birmingham team since the start of the season.
Review
Celtic had the chance to draw this game with Crerand missing a penalty.
Both teams started well with Celtic the stronger side but Hearts took the lead in the 13th minute when Paton beat MacKay and shot home. celtic responded and Crerand hit the bar. hearts though went further ahead when hamilton headed a cross from Rodger back and Wallace fired home.
On the restart Davidson fell over McNeill in the penalty area and the referee gave a penalty. Wallace shot the soft penalty home. Just after the restart Celtic had their own penalty when Polland fisted a goal bound header from McNeill off the line. Marshall dived full length to push the kick onto the post and caught the rebound. Bobby Murdoch scored from a Gallacher cross in the 60th minute and two minutes from time Hughes scored but it was too late for Celtic to push for the equaliser.
The result dropped Celtic down to third behind Dundee and Hearts.
