Trivia

  • Rangers had just come off of their first round home tie of the European Cup Winners Cup against Seville winning 4-0. Dundee had done even better in their first round European Cup game at home to Cologne winning 8-1.
  • An unchanged side for Celtic.
  • The penalty spot incident. Celtic were awarded a penalty on 32 minutes when Crerand was brought down in the box. So many Rangers players disputed where Crerand put the ball that in the end he gave up, threw the ball to them and told them to place it. Ritchie saved the spot kick.
  • Just before kick off hundreds who had been waiting at the main entrance rushed the Janefield Street entrance which gave way under pressure. 19 people were injured. A further two were taken to hospital when they were crushed against a barrier inside the ground.

Review

A rather dull game with neither attack really able to penetrate. A goal 6 minutes from time dropped the luck in Rangers favour. Henderson came out of a 50-50 with Kennedy and fired a weak shot which was deflected past Haffey. Hughes generally got the better of McKinnon but he was adequately covered by either Baxter or Davis. Brand's trip on Crerand brought the penalty described above. Celtic had most of the play in the second half but Haffey had more direct shots to deal with. The whistle when it finally came was a relief.
