Trivia
- Duncan MacKay sought a transfer from Celtic and handed in a request this week. He was told in no uncertain terms that he would not be allowed to leave. MacKay may have been influenced by the fact that south of the border players could earn up to £100per week, but that wages north of the border were capped andd at Celtic, earming a maximum of £35 per week, he was at the topmost pay bracket.
- A switch in the forward line with the 'second string' coming in. Out went Jackson, Murdoch and Byrne; in came Lennox, Gallacher and Brogan. John Hughes was out injured.
- Motherwell like Celtic had yet to win a home match in the League. Celtic had yet to lose an away match in the league.
Review
The game set off at a cracking pace with Motherwell getting the better of the early thrusts. Carroll had a good shot saved on the line after 20 minutes with Celtic getting back into it. Both sides had periods of ascendancy in the first half but there was no score.
Celtic got a let off when Haffey dropped a corner and MacKay blocked the goalward headed shot. They then went up the park and scored. A Brogan cross was punched clear by the goalkeeper only as far as Gallacher who fired into the roof of the net. Carroll settled it ten minutes later when he stabbed home a Lennox cross.
