Trivia
- This was the first time that the two teams had faced each other in a floodlit game at night. The Glasgow Football League said that they had merely chosen the date for the tie and it was up to the clubs to arrange the time and fixture location. Celtic did raise an objection but right at the eleventh hours. The police were strangely silent in the matter. So the tie went ahead as planned.
- Another funky line-up in the forwards for Celtic. John McNamee was installed as centre forward to the shock of most. Also in came John Divers.
- In the other first round tie, Third Lanark beat Queen's Park 6-3 to qualify for the semi final against Clyde. The draw here meant fixture complications for the semi final as to who would meet Partick Thistle. The organising commuittee did not want a repeat of the previous year when the final was played in May at the end of the season.
Review
Described by the Evening Times as 'an apology of a game' with the match rising 'only once or twice above lukewarm'.
The game started at a cracking pace with Rangers immediately challenging the Celtic goal followed by Divers having a shot off the crossbar at the other end. But it gradually settled down intio a game of blundering forwards. Rangers first goal was pure Haffey comedy classic. Wilson made a poor shot from a Brand pass and Haffey let the ball pass through his legs. Mcnamee equalised for Celtic and though Ritchie got both hands to the ball he could not stop it going over the line. Then Billy McNeill completely misjudged a Ritchie punt upfield and allowed Millarb a free run in on goal and a shot past Haffey. Divers equalised for Celtic. Billy McNeill injured his ankle in the last 15 minutes and ended up playing on the wing.
